3 Fun & Functional Natural Kitchen Layout Ideas

Posted October 1, 2022

The kitchen is one of the places we spend the most time in. From creating delicious meals to having fun dinner-time conversations with friends and family, kitchens see a lot of love. Your kitchen must be a functional and stylish place that soothes the soul, and you should never tire of spending time in it. Taking inspiration from nature, we cover some ways to style a natural kitchen and kitchen layout that you’ll love.

What is a Biophilic Kitchen?

A recurrent theme in 2021’s top kitchen concepts has been the introduction of nature indoors, also known as biophilic kitchen design. This rustic approach blurs the lines between interior and exterior design. The popularity of biophilic kitchen designs grew during the pandemic when we spent copious amounts of time indoors, highlighting the need to bring the outdoors to us. The increasing predominance of city homes with reduced opportunities to connect with nature has also influenced this trend. Being immersed in areas with natural vegetation has been proven to boost productivity, stimulate creativity, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve mental health and wellbeing.

1. Colour Palette

Well-integrated colour accents on your walls can elevate your kitchen style and lend a modern yet timeless air to the surroundings. Organic palettes that take inspiration from colours in nature, like sky blue or olive green, take it a step further than monochrome greys and whites, adding bursts of colour with pastel shades that aren’t too loud or disruptive.

Incorporate natural elements like unfinished wood, stone, or marble worktops into your kitchen layout. A nature-inspired palette will go well with your chosen wall colour to provide a calming and homey feeling to your natural kitchen. If you aren’t looking for a renovation project, incorporating items with textured and natural elements like clay mugs or wooden chopping boards will help provide an earthy hue as well.

2. Introduce Foliage

If your kitchen sees beautiful large windows and plenty of natural light, consider adding big plants in unoccupied areas. In addition to bringing the outdoors to you, you’ll have natural air purifiers to provide increased oxygen indoors. Cut flowers are perfect for special occasions or spontaneous treats on a stressful day. Place them on dining tables or kitchen islands to add a pop of colour and greenery.

3. Open Concept

An open-concept natural kitchen layout allows for increased light exposure and added space for ease of movement. Consider installing a skylight for sun and ventilation, perfect for clearing the mind, lifting the mood, and allowing your plants to get the required sunlight.
